Excursion behind the closed doors of the City Hall

Add to Favourites Your favourite!

The unique excursion programme created by the Estonian Centre for Architecture gives architecture enthusiasts the opportunity to peek behind the otherwise closed doors of Tallinn City Hall. The City Hall was one of the most exciting locations in Tallinn for Christopher Nolan’s film Tenet, which was screened in the autumn of 2020.

City Hall is part of a complex of buildings built to host the sailing regatta of the XXII Moscow Olympics in Tallinn in 1980. The building was designed by Raine Karp together with Riina Altmäe and Ülo Sirp in 1976. It is one of the most outstanding examples of Estonian Soviet-era architecture in Tallinn.

In the summer of 2019, for the first time, extensive filming for Hollywood’s large-scale production took place in Tallinn, when Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was filmed in different parts of the city. The most unique and interesting place that was chosen for a scene in Tallinn was the Tallinn City Hall, which played the role of the Kiev Opera House in the film. The building fascinated the film-makers primarily with its monumental aura.

Participants of the tour can hear about the history of Tallinn City Hall, see what the inside of the building where Nolan’s film was made looks like, and learn many other exciting things.
